Surgical Gowns are indispensable pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE) in operating rooms, designed to shield healthcare professionals from contamination by patients' blood and other bodily fluids. Typically made from non-woven fabric - a textile made directly from fibers. Surgical gowns offer a barrier against potential infectious agents.

Common Materials for Surgical gown:
  1. PP (Polypropylene): A cost-effective, waterproof material frequently used in disposable surgical gowns.
  2. SMS (Spunbond-Meltblown-Spunbond): A composite material consisting of three layers of nonwoven fabric. The middle layer, made of meltblown nonwoven fabric, provides excellent barrier properties to prevent the penetration of liquids and bacteria.
  3. SMMS (Spunbond-Meltblown-Meltblown-Spunbond): A composite material consisting of four layers of nonwoven fabric. The two middle layers, made of meltblown nonwoven fabric, offer even higher barrier properties.
  4. SMMS+PE (Spunbond-Meltblown-Meltblown-Spunbond + Polyethylene): A composite material consisting of five layers of nonwoven fabric. The outermost layer, made of polyethylene, provides enhanced waterproof and barrier properties.

The choice of surgical gown material should be based on a combination of the surgical procedure's risk level and the healthcare worker's comfort.

Specific Recommendations:
  1. Low-risk procedures: PP surgical gowns can be used.
  2. Moderate-risk procedures: SMS or SMMS surgical gowns are suitable.
  3. High-risk procedures: SMMS + PE surgical gowns are recommended.
  4. Procedures requiring higher comfort: SMS or SMMS surgical gowns may be preferred.

Additional Considerations When Choosing Surgical Gowns:
  1. Size: Surgical gowns should fit properly to avoid restricting movement.
  2. Style: Surgical gowns come in both one-piece and two-piece styles, allowing for personal preference.
  3. Features: Some surgical gowns offer additional features such as waterproofness, antimicrobial properties, and anti-static properties, which can be selected based on specific needs.
